9 am Sunday morning Divine Service for 12/21/14. Traditional liturgy and law gospel sermon. Pastor Houser’s sermon. First reading – 2 Samuel 7: 1-11, 16. Gospel – Luke 1:26-38. King David thinks he defeats Israel’s enemies and decides to build God a house – like his palace. However the reason Israel defeated their enemies was the hand of God. God did it for them so David wanted to do something for God. Works righteousness, idolatry, foolishness and vanity. (God didn’t ask David to build him a fancy temple.)

In the gospel, God dwells in Mary’s womb so He can take His place amongst us. It’s just Mary – nothing fancy. However the Lord favored her. The gospel is God doing the work for us – not the other way around. Jesus defeats the real enemies; satan, the world and our sinful human nature. He brings about our salvation and victory over sin.
